Different ways to volunteer

There are many different ways to volunteer in Buckinghamshire. From one-off events or flexible roles, to weekly shifts in a charity shop. There's no one-size fits all - opportunities will vary depending on what is involved, the skills required, time commitment, and more.

There are volunteering opportunities to fit around different lifestyles, circumstances, and age groups. Scroll down the page to have a look at the different ways you could volunteer in Bucks.

Flexible Volunteering

Flexible volunteering is when you can choose to volunteer around your existing commitments and schedule.

Flexibility makes volunteering more accessible for people who are interested in giving back but might not have a lot of time, or even for those who want to divide their time between more than one place. This could mean changing the number of hours you provide each week, the type of activities, or even the location.

The most common type of flexible volunteering is volunteering at events - these events only happen once or very infrequently, but there's no expectation for you to get involved again.

Other examples include:

  • joining a pool of volunteer drivers where you can pick the journeys you want to do
  • managing a charity's social media pages
  • ad-hoc support at a food bank

Remote and micro-volunteering can also fall under the category of flexible volunteering. Find out more information about both of these further down the page.

Remote Volunteering

Remote volunteering is an activity or role that you can undertake from the comfort of your own home, or digitally from anywhere.

This could involve a range of opportunities including, but not limited to, admin tasks, telephone befriending, or research.

Some of these might be one-off or temporary roles, or could require a longer-term commitment.

Micro-volunteering

Also known as bitesize volunteering, micro-volunteering means you are able to take on volunteering opportunities that don't have a large commitment. These are short activities that are quick to start and finish, some even taking as little as 5 minutes.

Micro-volunteering can be appealing to people who are pressed for time due to work, school, or other commitments.

For some volunteers, it's also a great way to get to know an organisation before committing to more.

Examples of micro-volunteering could include litter picking, completing a survey, proof-reading a document, baking cakes for a community cafe, and more.
