We are looking for volunteers to support us for the duration of one (or more if you have time) of our 5-day holidays in 2025. See our 2024 holiday destinations and dates on our website to give you an idea of where we go.
You will assist and support one or two people living with dementia and their carer(s) to help them have a great holiday. You’ll be: ▪ Meeting the Holiday Leader at the holiday location. ▪ Working together as a team to support all the activities planned in the itinerary such as trips, walks and tours ▪ Providing an extra pair of hands, supporting holiday guests with as little or as much assistance as they require with tasks such as unpacking/packing, and support during activities (there is no expectation to provide personal care). ▪ Offering physical support such as pushing a wheelchair. ▪ Encouraging guests to be appropriately dressed for the weather. ▪ Working together to support mealtimes. This may include some basic cooking, heating of pre-prepared meals, or preparing packed lunches. ▪ If needed, taking a person living with dementia through a photo album, listening to some music, reading sections of a book and so on. This could offer their carer a break for an hour, or may be required to divert their attention if they’re feeling restless/anxious/tired during the day. ▪ Assisting the Holiday Leader in encouraging the guests to participate in the holiday as much as possible, encouraging them to get ready, to eat and drink. ▪ Taking photos and/or videos on behalf of Dementia Adventure on a Dementia Adventure device. ▪ Administering first aid (training provided), should the need arise. ▪ Completing a feedback form after the holiday
Skills ▪ Sensitive to and understanding of people living with dementia. ▪ Enthusiastic about walking and activity outdoors. ▪ Friendly, thoughtful and person-centred. ▪ Adaptable and reliable. ▪ Good communication skills. ▪ Good organisational skills, well prepared. ▪ Confident and able to work as part of a team. ▪ Able to encourage and motivate others. ▪ Able to travel to local outdoor spaces. ▪ Willing to learn and receive feedback. ▪ Confident in using technology to participate in video calls

Supported Dementia Respite Breaks: Dementia Adventure has been offering fully supported dementia breaks for well over a decade. We understand the complex and individual needs of people living with dementia, as well as how carers can benefit from having the chance to relax and enjoy time with their loved one while someone else takes care of all the planning and background tasks.
Free online information and support sessions for family and friends: ‘Understanding Dementia Better’ and ‘Mood and Motivation’ are free, online sessions for family and friends supporting someone with dementia at home. These informal sessions offer you a chance to meet others in a similar situation to you and will help you discover small and simple steps that can make a big difference.
Training and Consultancy: As the only charity solely to focus on dementia and nature, Dementia Adventure is a sector leader in working with organisations in blue, green, health and care sectors. The team will work with you to create inclusive services, so that people with dementia can engage more with nature and have regular outdoor experiences.
Research: Dementia Adventure’s work is rooted in the latest research. We also support other organisations in their research by assisting with joint funding proposals or project ideas and by sharing relevant research or resources you have written.
