As a Community Events, Pop Up & Admin Volunteer in the Thames Valley, you will play an important role in helping us deliver our outreach work.

Purpose of this role: Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire & Milton Keynes within the Thames Valley areas

✨Could you gift us a little of your time? If the answer is yes, we would love to welcome you! Please read on to discover how you can get involved with our cause and support us in these Thames Valley areas.

What you will be doing:

Our dedicated staff and volunteers work together to support older people across the UK. We hear from older people themselves, as well as friends, family members, professionals and agencies who are concerned about elder abuse and safer ageing.

As a Community Events, Pop Up & Admin Volunteer in the Thames Valley, you will play an important role in helping us deliver our outreach work. Tasks include:

  • Attending vibrant local events such as recruitment fairs, community celebrations and pop-up stalls to raise awareness of who we are
  • Representing the organisation with confidence and professionalism when speaking to members of the public, community groups, public services, local authority representatives and other organisations.
  • Raising awareness of Hourglass (Safer Ageing) Helpline and the support we offer.
  • Signposting people to our services and recognising when someone may need additional help.
  • Carrying out light admin tasks, such as logging interactions, updating our CRM/database system (training provided), and helping prepare for events eg, receiving events materials at home like merchandising and setting up the stall display
  • Being a positive, approachable presence who helps people feel informed, supported and keen to find out more about our work

What are we looking for? You don’t need previous experience — just enthusiasm, reliability and a willingness to learn. This role is ideal for someone who :

  • Travel to local community locations from home
  • Enjoys meeting and talking to people.
  • Is confident representing a charity in public settings.
  • Can commit to attending a minimum two events per month.
  • Can offer 1–3 hours of admin time per month from home.
  • Has their own reliable broadband connection, device (laptop, PC or tablet) and mobile phone
  • Is comfortable using basic IT
  • Wants to make a meaningful difference in their community and support at events near to where you live.

This role is also suited to University students studying Health and Social Care, Social Work, Psychology, Public Health, or Community Development, though anyone with a passion for supporting older people is warmly encouraged to apply.

What you will gain:

  • Volunteer induction and role specific training – online / virtual in a small group setting
  • Ongoing support from staff and fellow volunteers and invites to webinars, conferences, social events and celebrations
  • Experience in community engagement, safeguarding awareness and admin skills
  • Helping to build connections in the community and sharing information about safer ageing
  • Debriefing and wellbeing support available
  • Approved travel and refreshment expenses reimbursed including meals, car mileage, or public transport and car parking in line with our Volunteer Policy
  • Experience that adds depth and value to your CV
  • A written volunteering reference

Commitment

After training is completed, volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum six months of active volunteering, including:

• 1 or 2 community events per month, and

• 1–3 hours of admin time per month.

Because community outreach depends on confirmed attendance, we ask volunteers to maintain 100% reliability for agreed event dates.

How to get involved?

If you’d like to support older people, build new skills and be part of a friendly, passionate team, we’d love to hear from you.

Criteria and Requirements:

  • Minimum age 21 years +
  • Application form and informal interviews
  • Two personal reference checks
  • DBS/PVG/AccessNI criminal records checks (if required)
  • (This role involves working with vulnerable adults. A DBS check is required, and it is a criminal offence to apply if you are barred from working with vulnerable groups)

We are looking forward to welcoming you to Hourglass (Safer Ageing).
