seeking a dedicated volunteer to support safeguarding across the organisation in a combined Safeguarding Personnel and Safeguarding Lead role.

About EYAI

Enhancing Young Adults’ Independence (EYAI) supports young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) to build confidence, gain work experience and move towards becoming active, independent members of their community.

We do this through tailored 12-week programmes, mentoring and community-based opportunities. For young people who need extra confidence-building or who experience anxiety and other mental health challenges, EYAI also offers volunteering opportunities at Pippa’s Community Café to help develop transferable skills before moving into wider community placements.

About the role

EYAI is seeking a dedicated volunteer to support safeguarding across the organisation in a combined Safeguarding Personnel and Safeguarding Lead role. This post will help ensure that EYAI maintains a safe, supportive and inclusive environment for the young people we work with by acting as a key point of contact for safeguarding concerns, coordinating appropriate responses, maintaining accurate records, supporting safer recruitment and helping to keep safeguarding policies, procedures and training up to date. The role will also provide day-to-day advice and guidance to staff and volunteers and help embed a strong safeguarding culture across EYAI’s programmes and community activities.

Key responsibilities

  • Act as the main point of contact for safeguarding concerns, disclosures, allegations or incidents, and ensure these are responded to promptly and appropriately in line with EYAI procedures and statutory guidance.
  • Provide safeguarding advice and guidance to staff, volunteers and placement settings, helping them understand reporting procedures, professional boundaries and good safeguarding practice.
  • Receive, record and manage safeguarding concerns confidentially and accurately, maintaining clear records of actions taken, referrals made and outcomes.
  • Make or coordinate referrals to relevant safeguarding agencies, local authority services or emergency services where appropriate, in consultation with senior management or trustees as required.
  • Lead or support safeguarding and risk assessments for programmes, volunteering activities, community placements and events.
  • Support safer recruitment processes, including appropriate DBS and vetting checks, induction requirements and safeguarding training records for volunteers.
  • Help maintain and review safeguarding policies, procedures and guidance so they remain current, practical and aligned with charity and sector expectations.
  • Promote a positive safeguarding culture across EYAI by increasing awareness, encouraging timely reporting and supporting continuous improvement in practice.
  • Work with senior staff, trustees and relevant partners to identify safeguarding risks, highlight learning points and support organisational safeguarding development.

Skills and experience

Essential

  • A strong commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and adults at risk.
  • Good understanding of safeguarding principles, confidentiality, professional boundaries and accurate record keeping.
  • Ability to respond calmly, appropriately and confidently to sensitive safeguarding situations.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide clear guidance to others.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with volunteers, trustees and external professionals where required.
  • Organised and reliable, with good attention to detail and the ability to manage confidential information responsibly.
  • Willingness to undertake appropriate safeguarding training and carry out the responsibilities of a safeguarding lead within EYAI.

Desirable

  • Previous experience in safeguarding, youth work, education, health, social care, community work or a related setting.
  • Experience of handling safeguarding concerns, maintaining incident records, or completing risk assessments.
  • Awareness of safer recruitment processes, including DBS checks and induction requirements.
  • Experience of reviewing policies, delivering guidance or supporting safeguarding training for others.
  • Knowledge of current safeguarding expectations relevant to charities working with young people.

Additional information

This is a volunteer role. Appropriate induction, support and safeguarding training will be provided. The role may be subject to an enhanced DBS check depending on the nature of the activities undertaken.
