Summary

Our Volunteer Canine Assistants greatly contribute to our canine residents' wellbeing.

Detailed description

We believe all dogs deserve to live life to the full.

Since 1891, we’ve been working for a better future for dogs and the people who love them.

When a dog is in distress, we care for them. When a dog needs a home, we find them a loving family. When an owner needs a helping hand (or paw) – or they just can’t cope, we’re ready to step in.

Volunteer Canine Assistants help keep our dogs happy and healthy with regular exercise and enrichment, as well as helping to ensure that all our canine facilities are in tip-top condition.

We are looking for volunteers aged 18 or over for this role.

What will you be doing?

  • Working with our centre staff to keep kennels clean and tidy
  • Providing exercise, socialisation and enrichment to our four-legged residents
  • Reporting any concerns regarding each dog’s health and welfare to centre staff
  • A range of kennel-related tasks such as food prep, poop scooping and laundry
  • Basic dog training in line with our methods – we’ll provide training when needed
  • Use centre-approved equipment such as leads, harnesses and muzzles when instructed
  • Completing our dogs’ feeding and exercising records when needed
  • Reporting any faulty or damaged equipment to centre staff

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Passion about dogs, dog welfare and experience of handling them
  • Good level of physical fitness for walking and handling dogs of all shapes, sizes and strengths and other physical duties
  • Excellent face-to-face communication skills with the ability to listen
  • Confident and friendly manner
  • Ability to work comfortably in a close-knit team or alone
  • Conscientious with a can-do attitude
  • Ability to follow instructions

What this role will offer you:

We will provide you with a main contact who will manage your tasks, answer any questions you might have and help you with the volunteer rota.

You’ll also receive ongoing role-specific training, guidance and support as well as an opportunity to gain and develop new skills.

We will provide a Dog Sanctuary Bucks volunteer uniform, and will recognise the work you are kindly undertaking by enrolling you in our Volunteer Merits Scheme.
