Summary

Could you spare 30 minutes a week to phone and chat to someone and make their day?

Detailed description

Telephone befrienders call older people who can’t get out of their house much but would love to chat and catch up. If you like to do the same, this could be for you!

You’ll make regular telephone calls to an older person experiencing loneliness and isolation. These friendly chats provide a lifeline of friendship for older people and a vital link with the outside world. This is a fun, flexible and rewarding role which will enable you to connect with and make a real and lasting difference to someone.

Your chat can help them know someone cares about them. You can also check in on them and let us know if something is not right.

What is expected of me?

We are looking for people who have excellent listening skills but who also like a good chat. If you think you can strike up a friendship easily over the phone, this volunteer role is for you.

Getting started is simple, there are a few checks that we do through the application and we provide you with information to help you. Then you will receive ongoing support and updates from the Age UK Bucks team.

What's great about becoming a telephone befriender?

  • It's a simple way to give something back through a weekly call to an older person.
  • It is rewarding and new friendships can be formed.
  • Your calls can make a massive difference to the happiness and wellbeing of an older person.

Just 30 minutes of your time a week could make a wonderful difference to an older person's life. If you're friendly and good at talking on the phone, this could be for you…
