A Shift Leader brings the team together, makes sure everyone knows what to do, and keeps the shelter running smoothly.
This is a vital role and we especially need Shift Leaders who will be happy to lead the night and morning shifts. New and returning volunteers are most welcome to attend Shift Leader training to explore if they want to take on the role.
What you do
You’ll take the lead for your shift, welcoming volunteers, giving a clear briefing, and keeping things running safely and calmly.
Depending on whether you’re leading an evening, overnight, or morning shift, your responsibilities include:
- Giving a safety and information briefing at the start of the shift.
- Allocating tasks to volunteers and making sure everyone feels supported.
- Recording notes in the action log and handing over to the next shift leader.
- Making sure health, safety, and safeguarding actions are taken as needed.
- Ensuring the venues are left clean and secure.
- Liaise with the Shelter Coordinator, a WHC member of staff, or another staff member on call if additional support is needed.
What we’re looking for
If you’re organised, calm under pressure, comfortable giving instructions and good at bringing people together, this could be you.
Training and support
You’ll receive specialist in-person, practical training before you lead a shift, plus ongoing support from staff and the opportunity to shadow a shift before taking the lead.
