Summary

Volunteers will remove tall vegetation from sections of a nature reserve that cannot be grazed and weed around plants that compete poorly.

Detailed description

This reserve has many unusual and nationally rare and threatened species. They need flower rich, chalk grasslands and are unable to survive if the land becomes too shady and cool. We will be cutting taller, scrubby vegetation with electric brushcutters in some places (especially where the sheep (currently on site) cannot graze), removing smaller scrub by hand and then raking off the cut /pulled materials. In other parts of the reserve we will dig out the roots of bramble and old man's beard to prevent them dominating far rarer and slower growing plants. We will use tree poppers to extract entire small saplings (root and all) from the chalk grassland to maintain the very diverse flora.

We work in two sessions of approx 1hr 15 mins with a break, for drinks, biscuits and sometimes cake.

if you are visiting for the first time we can arrange a guided tour to explain the value of the site and why we do the specific work that we do. Whatever your level of fitness we can find you a task, from sawing through thicker stems to taking photos of those engaged in something more physical.

Getting there

Our reserve is along Riding Lane, Holtspur, Beaconsfield, nearest postcode HP9 1BT, What3words manage.banana.chimp. However please note that Riding Lane is a very narrow road with just one passing place. Many volunteers prefer to park at Cherry tree Road, Holtspur, and walk the (steep) footpath down to Riding Lane and along 250m of road to our entrance (between the Ridings Stables and Qmran). There is parking on the reserve on days when we are undertaking conservation tasks.
