You'll help run regular Guide unit (group) meetings, work with a team of volunteers who together plan and deliver a programme of awesome activities.

Do you have leadership qualities? Or are you looking to level up your leadership skills, and would like to work with a team of volunteers to deliver a fantastic programme of activities that show girls what they’re capable of? If the answer is yes, then Guide leader is a great role for you!

What is a Guide unit?

Guides is a relaxed, welcoming space where girls age 10-14 can have fun, learn and be themselves. They meet regularly in groups, called units. These meetings are run by volunteer teams, usually made up of adult leaders, helpers, young leaders who work together to plan and deliver awesome activities for girls.

What you’ll be doing as leader

As a leader you’ll help run the unit alongside a volunteer team and plan activities. Our units are all quite different, which means all leaders do slightly different things. Some groups of leaders share the unit responsibilities or work with behind-the-scenes admin volunteers to help make the guiding magic happen. There’s a lot of space to make this role your own; you can be involved in a way that works for you and fits around your life. But you’ll likely:

  • Plan and deliver activities for girls based on our programme, help girls earn badges and achieve their goals.
  • Work with a team of volunteers to create a safe, fun, welcoming and inclusive space for girls.
  • Communicate with parents, carers and other Girlguiding volunteers, making sure the unit runs smoothly.
  • Learn new things, make new friends and demonstrate our values of caring, challenging, empowering, inclusive, fun and inspiring in all you do.
  • Get to take girls on planned sleepovers, events, trips or adventures!

The skills and qualities you’ll need

  • Be friendly, reliable and able to work as part of a team.

You’ll have:

  • Good organisational skills.
  • Good communication skills.
  • You might have leadership skills.

But you don’t have to tick every box - our leadership development programme will support you to develop your skills and become the best leader you can be.

What you’ll get

  • Loads of opportunities to learn new things and build your skills. You’ll have access to training on our learning platform, from first aid to delivering adventurous activities with webinars, elearnings or in-person sessions near you to choose from.
  • Support to complete our one-of-a-kind leadership development programme that will help grow your confidence and skills to become a fantastic leader, with us and for your future.
  • Safeguarding training to make sure you’re fully equipped and confident to make Girlguiding a safe space for everyone.
  • Support from other local volunteers in your area
  • The chance to connect with like-minded people in your area and beyond. You’ll be part of WAGGGS, a worldwide movement inspiring girls across over 150 countries.
  • The satisfaction of knowing you’re helping girls in your community know they can do anything!
  • The rewarding feeling of watching girls learn and grow, whether that’s during one impactful activity or over their time at Guides.

What we need from you

We’ll also ask you to

  • Provide 2 character references.
  • Complete a criminal record disclosure check (DBS).
  • Complete our safer guiding training because this role involves working directly with girls.
  • Complete our leadership development programme.

The leader role is open to women only - we believe that ensuring our leadership roles are held by women creates the best environment for girls to thrive. In line with the Equality Act 2010, women refers to those whose sex at birth was female.
