Compassionate Neighbours is a free, community based, volunteer led scheme, supporting people experiencing loneliness or social isolation.
Compassionate Neighbours is a free, community based, volunteer led scheme, supporting people experiencing loneliness or social isolation and who are living with a life limiting, or who are adult carers feeling isolated due to their caring responsibilities for someone living with a life-limiting illness, or who may be bereaved adults experiencing loneliness or social isolation where bereavement support is not the primary focus.
Trained volunteers, known as Compassionate Neighbours, visit their Community Member regularly to offer friendship, a listening ear, emotional support, and help them stay connected with their community.
What does the role involve?
- Building a supportive, trust based relationship with your matched Community Member.
- Offering companionship: conversation, shared interests, a listening presence, and emotional support.
- Supporting your matched person to feel more connected with community, friends, interests, and the wider world.
- Maintaining appropriate boundaries, respecting confidentiality, and following safeguarding practices.
Experience & Personal Qualities
We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds with the following qualities:
- A genuine interest in people and a desire to make a positive difference.
- Warmth, empathy, patience, reliability, and a calm manner.
- Good listening and communication skills.
- A non judgemental attitude and commitment to confidentiality.
- Ability to carry out their volunteer role independently but comfortable to ask for support when needed.
- No previous experience is required – full training is provided.
Training and Support
- Two-day in person Compassionate Neighbour training course.
- Access to Practice Development Meetings (PDMs) for reflection, peer support, and ongoing learning.
- Regular ongoing support from the Compassionate Neighbours Coordinators
- All volunteers are expected to work within our values: We are Professional, We are Ambitious, We are our Community, We are a Team. Together we are Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity.
