Summary

Passionate about culture? Volunteer as a Museum Engagement Officer! A 3-9 month creative, supported role with monthly expenses—bring history to life!

Detailed description

Engagement Officer

We know that we need to increase our museum's profile and reach new audiences; this important new volunteering role is all about getting our wonderful collection out there in the community.

This role is one of three in the ‘Co-Collections Manager Programme’ – an initiative launched in 2024 by Chesham Museum to broaden heritage sector engagement and foster opportunities for young people in the local area.

This volunteering role is flexible across a 3-9 month structured programme with involvement in exciting creative projects and plenty of support throughout (including regular meetings, 1:1s and a CV workshop).

The successful Engagement Officer will leave the museum with good experience, great references and newfound confidence to springboard their creative or heritage career!

What the role involves

  • Social Media Management – Managing the Museum’s social media channels, including Facebook and Instagram, ensuring that changes to opening-hours are shared, new content is regularly posted and responding to inquiries (direct messages and comments).

  • Content Creation - Creating fun, interesting and visually engaging content including short form content/reels, and developing and launching new creative approaches to build our online following and engagement.

  • Photography - Lead collections photography – ensuring images are both captioned and stored correctly, working alongside the Co-Collections Managers.

  • Interpretation - Providing practical support and creative insight in the development of museum interpretation (the various ways museums communicate the stories, meanings, and significance of their collections to visitors).

Would suit you if you

  • Are creative and idea-driven with a ‘hands-on’ approach.
  • Are interested in Illustration, Graphic Design, Photography, Marketing or History.
  • Want to develop a strong creative portfolio.
  • Are interested in gaining curatorial or work experience in the heritage or arts sectors.

What you would expect from us

  • Monthly expenses allowance with additional expenses paid subject to prior agreement.
  • A full induction and structured support including monthly 1:1s.
  • Quarterly Career Professional Development (CPD) sessions including CV workshop(s).
  • Access to free volunteer-only events and programming.
  • A ‘foot in the door’ - work experience and signposting to wider training opportunities and sector-specific meetings.
  • Reference upon completion of programme.

About Chesham Museum

Chesham Museum was founded in 2004. It is a community organisation, conceived and run by local volunteers, with funding mainly through the efforts of its supporters with the support of local businesses, schools and the wider population.

Its first home was in the former stables of a public house ‘The Gamekeeper’s Lodge’ in Bellingdon Rd, and it relocated, in 2009, to 15 Market Square, Chesham until June 2017 when a change in circumstances meant it was forced to close its doors.

Since then the museum has maintained a strong online presence through its website and social media channels, helping to provide a connection to its audiences and users both local, visitors and researchers from across the world. Most recently its has worked hard to raise funds and volunteer support to develop this new website to bring the best of its exhibitions, collections, events and opportunities to enjoy and engage with the town’s rich history.

In early 2024 the museum will re-open in a new exhibition space in Chesham Town Hall. Visit us to discover the history of Chesham’s people and places. Share your ideas about how we can create a new museum together.

The museum aims to educate visitors about the rich history of Chesham and its past inhabitants. Its collection primarily deal with things that are associated with Chesham, but also the outer-lying areas: Asheridge, Ashley Green, Ballinger, Bellingdon, Chartridge, Hyde Heath, Latimer, Lee Common and Ley Hill. It offers insights into a unique history of social reform and industry in Buckinghamshire, the fourth largest town.

Chesham Museum is a registered charity.
