Shopping Companion Volunteer

Could you lend a helping hand on shopping trips?

For people with sight loss, everyday tasks like shopping can be more challenging. As a Shopping Companion Volunteer, you’ll act as a friendly guide, supporting someone to shop safely and with confidence — whether it’s the weekly groceries, choosing clothes, or picking out a special gift.

Where & when?

·        Days and times arranged between you and the person you support

·        Flexible, depending on their needs and your availability

What you will be doing:

·        Meeting a blind or partially sighted person at their home or agreed location

·        Acting as a sighted guide while shopping together

·        Assisting with purchases and handling items where needed

·        (Sometimes) helping put shopping away at home afterwards

·        Providing companionship and conversation during the trip

What skills and experience are needed?

·        Caring, friendly, and understanding nature

·        Good communication and listening skills

·        Reliable and patient

·        Willing to commit for at least six months

·        (If driving) a full UK licence, MOT, and insurance

What support will be given?

·        Induction and training (including sight loss awareness and sighted guiding)

Criminal Record Check Information (DBS):

This role requires an Enhanced DBS check (working with adults at risk), as it involves one-to-one support.
