Befriender

Could you be a friendly face and a listening ear?

As a Befriender, you’ll offer companionship to blind and partially sighted people who may feel isolated or lonely. Sometimes it’s as simple as having a cuppa and a chat, other times it might be a walk, a trip to a local café, or a visit to somewhere of interest. What matters most is the friendship and connection you bring.

Where & when?

·        In the client’s home or out in the local community

·        Visits arranged at a time that suits both you and the client

What you will be doing:

·        Visiting members at home for a friendly chat and companionship

·        Supporting them to take part in activities they enjoy — such as refreshments out, local trips, or short walks

·        Building a trusting, reliable relationship over time

·        Helping reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation

What skills and experience are needed?

·        Caring, friendly, and patient nature

·        Good listening and communication skills

·        Reliable and understanding

·        Flexible approach to visits

·        Able to commit for at least six months

What will you gain from the role?

·        The chance to make a real difference to someone’s life

·        Lasting friendships and meaningful connections

·        Improved confidence and communication skills

·        A sense of fulfilment and wellbeing

·        Experience working with people with sight loss

What support will be given?

·        Induction and training (including sight loss awareness and sighted guiding)

·        Ongoing training and development opportunities

·        Out-of-pocket expenses covered

·        Support from your Home Services Coordinator
