Summary

We are looking for volunteers to assisting staff in our community supported libraries with tasks such as serving customers, tidying and presenting stock.

Detailed description

If you are passionate about libraries and would enjoy talking to our customers about their library needs, issuing and returning their books or signposting them to an appropriate member of staff or service, when needed. This role could be for you. 


At Wendover Community Library, we are looking for volunteers to support us on Friday afternoons between 3:30 and 5:00


Tasks Include:  

  • To serve customers wishing to borrow or return books to the Library. 
  • Handling payment from Customers using library services (Printing/photocopying/Scanning etc) or paying charges for reservations or overdue books.  
  • To shelve returned items in the appropriate area of the library and in the correct order. 
  • To help keep the library shelves and display areas tidy and clean.
  • To assist in the finding of items on the shelves from library reports.
  • To signpost queries from members of the public to the appropriate member of staff. 
  • Promoting and demonstrating library resources and services. 
  • Being a positive ambassador for the library service. 
  • Liaising with library staff on a regular basis. 
  • To take part in an induction process. 
  • To be aware of Buckinghamshire Council’s aims, organisational values and behaviours and their impact on this role. 
  • To carry out the duties of this role in accordance with the Council’s policies in respect of diversity and community cohesion. 
  • To carry out all tasks and responsibilities with reasonable care for the health and safety of others and to co-operate fully with the Council in Health and Safety matters. 
  • To adhere to all Covid safety procedures and follow all current Covid safety guidance.

 

Skills required: 

  • Good communicator and comfortable engaging with people, including those with additional needs.
  • Good knowledge of the alphabet and basic numeracy (training will be given on the Dewey decimal system used for non-fiction items). 
  • Familiarity with using a computer (training will be given on how to use the “Spydus” Library system used for issuing, reserving and returning books). 
  • An interest and awareness of library services. 
  • Keen to learn new skills and to take on new challenges. 
  • Ability to work as part of a team as well as on own initiative .
