Summary
We are looking for patient, personable volunteers, ideally with experience helping or working with disabled adults, to host a new monthly book group at Marlow Library.
Detailed description
Volunteers Needed at Marlow Library! We are seeking volunteers with excellent, confident people skills to host our NEW and FREE monthly Book Club for disabled adults who struggle to read or cannot read. The book club is called 'Books for Words'.
The volunteer would ideally have experience with disabled adults, and they would welcome visitors to the group and host a storytelling session with picture books (the stories are entirely illustrated with no text: it’s open to interpretation and designed to promote conversation and social interaction. Based on these pictures, the attendees can decide what is happening in the story).
We are looking to run the session on the last Tuesday of the month from 11-12 (so the likely start date is 31 March, but we are entirely flexible with what day and time this session occurs to suit our volunteer/s).
Training is provided, and we have participants already eager and waiting to attend the first session.
As part of the role you will be required:
- To assist with the setting up process for the activity and help to ensure a safe and comfortable environment
- To meet and greet visitors
- To host the book club by guiding the attendees through the story, asking them what they think is happening, and including everyone
- To carry out tasks in a public environment
- To signpost queries from members of the public to the appropriate member of staff
- To take part in an induction process
- To take part in online training
- To be aware of Buckinghamshire Council’s aims, organisational values and behaviours and their impact on this role.
- To carry out the duties of this role in accordance with the Council’s policies in respect of diversity and community cohesion
Skills required:
- You're a clear and confident communicator, comfortable engaging with people (including those with additional needs, and disabilities which may vary in type and severity, including sight loss)
- An interest in books, reading and the library service would be beneficial.
- Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
