We're recruiting a finance trustee to lead the financial affairs, oversee financial planning and governance of a local riding for the disabled charity

A key member of the Board of Trustees, you will be responsible for ensuring strong financial stewardship and supporting the charity to use its resources effectively in pursuit of its mission.

Working closely with the Chair, trustees, and any finance volunteers, you will provide oversight, guidance, and assurance on all financial matters.

Core Responsibilities

  • Financial Leadership — Maintain an overview of the charity’s financial health and ensure robust financial planning, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Financial Controls & Compliance — Ensure appropriate financial controls, policies, and procedures are in place and adhered to, in line with charity law and best practice.
  • Management Accounts & Reporting — Present clear, accurate financial information to the Board, enabling informed decision‑making.
  • Annual Accounts & Audit — Oversee the preparation of annual accounts, liaise with independent examiners/auditors, and ensure timely submission to the Charity Commission.
  • Risk & Reserves Management — Monitor financial risks, advise on reserves policy, and support long‑term sustainability planning.
  • Support to the Board — Provide financial insight, guidance, and constructive challenge to help shape strategy and ensure responsible use of funds.
  • Manage DBS checks for new volunteers and Trustees, maintain records and renewals
  • Independent Contractor terms of engagement – prepare contracts and statement of works for freelance workers, contractors and suppliers

What are we looking for?

  • A Trustee with financial and / or accounting expertise to oversee financial planning and governance
  • Fundraising experience would be helpful
  • We welcome people from all backgrounds and are looking for other trustees in addition to financial and fundraising
  • Analytical Skills — Ability to interpret financial information, identify trends, and communicate clearly to non‑financial colleagues.
  • Integrity & Accountability — Commitment to transparency, accuracy, and high ethical standards.
  • Strategic Perspective — Ability to balance day‑to‑day oversight with long‑term financial planning.
  • Collaborative Working Style — Willingness to work closely with trustees, volunteers, and external partners.

What difference will you make?

Replacing the outgoing Treasurer Trustee who has been with the charity for 6+ years, you will have the scope to introduce change, lead and implement effective controls and financial management; supporting the drive for sustainable income generation from fundraising and other sources and careful financial management of the charity's costs - horses are expensive and unpredictable.
