With a part-time role in corporate communications and two young children, Anna has a busy life. Despite her commitments, she has found that becoming a trustee for Climate Action Wendover has been a rewarding and manageable way to contribute to a cause she genuinely cares about.
How did you come to be a trustee?
Anna joined Climate Action Wendover after attending one of their public events and within 6 months was asked to become a trustee. on taking up the role, Anna found a welcoming environment where trustees were supported to contribute in ways that felt meaningful and fulfilling.
What does your role involve?
As Membership Secretary, Anna manages member communications, maintains mailing lists, promotes events and helps create content for newsletters and social media. Working collaboratively with other trustees, she gathers information from across the group and ensures members stay informed about activities and opportunities. This takes on average about an hour a week which she can easily fit in during the evening after the children have gone to bed. There are also bi-monthly trustee meetings which are informative, sociable and collaborative.
What difference has being a trustee made to you?
Although Anna works in communications professionally, her trustee role has enabled her to broaden her experience in new areas. Through volunteering she has developed skills in community engagement, unfamiliar social media channels and event delivery, while also gaining a greater understanding of local environmental issues and local government structures.
The role has also provided valuable governance experience that complements her professional career and enhances her CV.
One of the unexpected benefits of trusteeship has been the opportunity to meet new people and expand her network. Through the organisation, Anna has connected with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, including specialists in schools engagement and renewable energy.
These relationships have helped her gain new perspectives, learn from others' expertise and feel more connected to the local community. What began as a volunteering opportunity has also led to friendships and valuable professional connections.
Making a Difference
For Anna, the role is closely aligned with her personal values. She is passionate about tackling climate change, building community resilience and supporting local environmental action. Being a trustee gives her a practical way to contribute to issues that matter deeply to her while helping shape projects and campaigns that have a positive impact locally.
She believes the experience has been both personally rewarding and an example she can set for her children about giving back to the community.
Would you encourage others to volunteer or become trustees?
In short, yes. The organisation has recently had success recruiting volunteers through the Volunteer Bucks platform, attracting strong candidates for key roles. As a result, it is continuing to recruit for additional positions and welcomes people who are interested in supporting its work.
Anna would happily consider becoming a trustee again in the future and encourages others to explore trustee opportunities.
“It hasn't been onerous. It's another set of experiences, another thing for my CV, and there have been no downsides to being a trustee, only upsides.”
Key Message
Anna's experience demonstrates that trusteeship can be flexible, rewarding and accessible, even for people balancing work and family responsibilities. By contributing just a small amount of time each week, she has been able to support an important cause, develop new skills, grow her network and make a meaningful difference in her community.
